Looks like the story of Abu Ghraib is taking yet another turn for the worse. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal exposed the White House's pro-torture legal memos. Today's Washington Post reports that US intelligence personnel ordered the use of unmuzzled dogs to frighten (and apparently bite) prisoners during interrogations:
Two dog handlers at Abu Ghraib were "having a contest" to see how many detainees they could make involuntarily urinate out of fear of the dogs.Knight Ridder says that dozens of missing Iraqis are believed to be "lost in Abu Ghraib". And the New York Times says that the military investigation is moving higher up the chain of command.
Worst of all: There are rumors in the blogosphere that there exists video of soldiers at Abu Ghraib torturing children. According to one account of a recent talk by journalist Seymour Hersh at the University of Chicago:
[Hersh] said that after he broke [the story of] Abu Ghraib, people are coming out of the woodwork to tell him this stuff. He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, "You haven't begun to see evil..." then trailed off. He said, "horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run." He looked frightened.
